MANTLES WOOD AND OTHER PROJECTS
MANTLES WOOD SCENARIO
Mantles Wood is 4mm scale / OO gauge representing a ‘what might have been’ on the outer reaches of the Metropolitan.
The assumption is that in the 1930’s, in the early years of London Transport, electrification was extended from Rickmansworth to Mantles Wood, a new station north of Amersham at the hoped-for dormitory town that was to be built for the expanding population of Aylesbury.
In the event, WW2 put paid to any hoped-for traffic and the area never fulfilled its potential. Tracks were owned by London Transport, with British Railways having running rights via the old Great Central route to Marylebone. To this day Mantles Wood remains the demarcation point between Transport for London, and Network Rail.
Aylesbury remained a place on London Underground until 1961 so passenger services to Aylesbury are LT stock hauled by BR locomotives as well as BR stock hauled by BR locos from Marylebone.
Thanks to Paul Davis for the photographs and the write-up on Mantles Wood.
